ISO 9001:2008

For more than a decade, ISO 9001:2008 has set parameters for an industry-leading, accredited quality management system. It is voluntarily pursued and requires an organization to provide products or services that satisfy the needs of its customers and regulatory frameworks, while simultaneously taking steps to improve the system to maximize customer contentment.

ISO 9001:2008 prioritizes six principles of quality management:

  • Focus on Customers: All organizations depend on their customers for success, which is why initiatives and activities should be driven by customers’ needs.
  • Demonstrate Leadership: An effective leader (or leadership framework) provides the direction and purpose needed to propel an organization forward.
  • Involve Your Teams: Everyone at every level should understand the organization’s goals and be motivated to realize them.
  • Adopt a Process-Oriented Mindset: Resources need to be managed properly achieve targets, necessitating a systemized understanding of how one action impacts others.
  • Seek Ongoing Improvement: Encouraging a growth-oriented culture is the best way to promote continual advancement.
  • Make Evidence-Based Decisions: Choices (whether a minor day-to-day adjustments or a major change of direction) should always be based on careful analysis.

Following the necessary steps to secure and maintain ISO 9001:2008 accreditation makes any organization (including Tompkins Industries and Tompkins Canada) more effective, efficient, and successful and ensures ongoing satisfaction for our customers.

Tompkins Industries has been ISO 9001:2008 certified since 2001.

ANAB Accreditation

The ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB) is an American accreditation body that audits and accredits certification bodies to ensure they’re adhering to strict international standards (like ISO 9001:2008) and perform work properly.

Perry Johnson Registrars

Perry Johnson Registrars, Inc. offers third-party, independent quality management system audits for quality and environmental management in accordance with ISO 9001.

OSHA and RoHS Compliance

Tompkins strives to adhere to all applicable National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and RoHS standards. The Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1970 created both NIOSH and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Today, NIOSH is part of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the CDC being an arm of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Since July 2006, the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive has banned the release within the European Union (EU) of any electronic or electrical equipment containing more than acceptable levels of mercury, lead, cadmium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB), hexavalent chromium, or polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants.

California Proposition 65

California approved the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act (otherwise known as Prop 65) in 1986. It requires the state to produce a list of chemicals that are known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other types of reproductive harm. The list now includes approximately 920 chemicals. Prop 65 is administered by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA).

Prop 65 serves to:

  • Require businesses to notify Californians about significant amounts of chemicals in any products they purchase, that are present in homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment.
  • Prevent businesses in the state from knowingly discharging significant amounts of chemicals on the list into sources of drinking water.

Tompkins Industries provides Prop 65 warning labels on many of our brass products, particularly those destined for California, to inform consumers that the products may contain chemicals on the State of California’s Prop 65 list. The labels are simply there to ensure Tompkins Industries maintains compliance with California’s Prop 65 warning label requirements.

Since most of our products are used for hydraulic applications, it is best to inquire prior to the use in drinking water applications if this is the best product for the job or if an alternate option is available.
